Charley Hull has three tattoos, and the first one comes with a story. In a Q&A with Golfweek, the 30-year-old said she got it after a night out partying in Ibiza when she was 17.
Hull said she was coming back from a club with her best friend, James, when she decided it was “a great idea to get a tattoo across my head.” The words were “hold tight,” a line the two always said to each other.
James talked her out of the forehead. Hull got it on her foot instead, and James got a matching one on his arm.
She didn’t remember any of it the next morning. Hull said she woke up hungover and asked James why she had walked home with a plastic bag on her foot. He told her it was the wrapping from her new tattoo, and that they’d had to stop her from putting it on her forehead.

Her second tattoo is her ex-husband’s name on her wrist, which Hull said she has tried to have removed. The third is a lightning bolt on her right pinky that matches one belonging to LPGA pro Georgia Hall. Hull said the two always make pinky promises and called their bond electric.
Hull also opened up about quitting smoking. She said her father has smoked 40 cigarettes a day since he was about 10, and she grew up hating it. He once promised to quit if she reached a scratch handicap, then started again two days later when she got to plus-1, arguing the deal only covered scratch.
Hull said she was prescribed Xanax a couple of years ago during a stressful stretch, around the time of her ADHD diagnosis. She threw the pills away out of fear of becoming addicted, then moved to vaping, then cigarettes. She has now used nicotine pouches for about a year and a half.
Her caddie, Adam Woodward, still hasn’t gotten revenge for the fake scratch card prank. Hull said he loved the joke, has been on her bag for 10 years, and is one of her best friends. She added that she expects a payback attempt when she stays with him in a few weeks.

On pace of play, Hull said slow players should be banned from the tour, starting with three months and going up to a year. If she were commissioner for a day, she’d run 100-player fields, cut to 50 or 55, and play twosomes on the weekend.
Hull had planned to partner with Michael Brennan again at the Grant Thornton Invitational. She’ll miss it to be a bridesmaid at Hall’s wedding. Hull called Brennan a future major winner and said she sees him becoming world No. 1.
She also named Seve Ballesteros as a role model. Hull said she loved how players used to shape shots and play by feel, and that the modern men’s game has become a power game she finds boring.
Hull, ranked eighth in the world, won the PIF Saudi Ladies International earlier this season and finished second at the U.S. Women’s Open.
