Shaun Norris Hit With Two-Shot Penalty For Kicking Divot At Nexo Championship

Shaun Norris was assessed a two-shot penalty during the final round of the Nexo Championship on Sunday after moving a replaced divot at Trump International Golf Links, turning what would have been a par into a double bogey and derailing his bid for a third career DP World Tour title.

Norris was preparing to hit a pitch shot on the par-4 fifth hole when he felt something under his right foot. He stepped back off the shot and kicked away the divot, believing it was loose turf rather than a divot that had already been replaced. See video and fan reactions below.

Under Rule 8.1, which governs the principle of playing the course as it is found, a player faces a two-stroke penalty for removing or pressing down a divot that has already been replaced, or other cut turf already in place. Norris was penalized under that rule, the same one applied to Bryson DeChambeau’s penalty at this year’s U.S. Open.

The violation turned his par at the fifth into a double-bogey six, dropping him to two over for the day and two shots off the lead at the time, while he was tied for the lead with Scott Jamieson and Matthew Jordan.

Jamieson moved into the lead shortly after the penalty was applied, birdieing the first two holes of his back nine to pull three shots clear of Norris.

He responded with a birdie at the 11th to get back to eight under, then fell back with a double bogey at the 12th. He added a third double bogey at his closing hole, carding a 4-over 76 to finish at 5 under, tied for seventh.

Jamieson closed with a 5-under 67 to finish at 11 under, winning by two strokes over Matthew Jordan for his first DP World Tour title in 14 years.

“Fourteen years, that’s wild,” Jamieson said. “It’s just so tough, so hard to win. I was so patient all day, just can’t believe I’ve won.”

Norris, 44, has two DP World Tour wins on his résumé, the 2022 Steyn City Championship and the 2024 Alfred Dunhill Championship, both won in South Africa. He was still seeking his first title outside his home country.
