Charlie Woods wins high school district title with 40-foot birdie

Charlie Woods saved his best putt for last. The Benjamin School senior holed a 40-foot birdie on the 18th hole Tuesday to win medalist honors at the FHSAA Class 1A-District 14 tournament at Champions Club at Summerfield in Stuart, Fla.

Woods shot a 2-under 69 to beat teammate Brooks Colton by one. Colton posted a 1-under 70, highlighted by an eagle on the fourth hole.

Benjamin won the team title at 290, 2 over par. Oxbridge Academy finished second at 305 and King’s Academy was third at 311. Cardinal Newman (330) and Pine School (337) rounded out the top five.

Woods made birdies on Nos. 4, 10, 13 and 18. His only bogey came at the par-5 15th, and he parred every other hole.

Oxbridge and King’s Academy pushed Benjamin early before the Buccaneers pulled away on the back nine. Harbeck liked what he saw from the top of his lineup.

“We got two good rounds out of Charlie and Brooks,” Benjamin coach Toby Harbeck said, via The Palm Beach Post. “Charlie made a 40-foot putt on the last hole to win the individual title. Charlie shot a 69 and Brooks shot a 70. That’s what you want out of your No. 1 and No. 2.”

Wind and rain hit the course all day. Harbeck said the conditions made the result even better.

“It played really hard, long, and windy and rainy,” Harbeck said. “It was everything. So, I’m very pleased. You’re trying to move on each week and get to the finals, so that’s what we did. We’ve got to keep going forward.”

Benjamin advances to regionals next week. The Class 1A state championship is in mid-November.

The Bucs are the defending state champions. Woods shot a 4-under 68 in the second round of last year’s final, the lowest score of the day, as Benjamin won its second state title in three years.

Woods also helped Benjamin win the Palm League team title at Biltmore Miami in September. He shot an even-par 71 to finish eighth and birdied the 18th.

The district win follows a busy summer on the junior circuit. Woods started it at the U.S. Junior Amateur at Saucon Valley in July.

He shot 76-70 to finish 5 over and tied for 63rd. That put him in a 14-player playoff for two spots in match play.

On the first playoff hole, the par-5 first, Woods needed a birdie. A phone camera clicked during his third shot from the rough, and he flubbed the chip.

“Really, dude?” Woods said. “I mean, come on.”

He made bogey and was eliminated. Miles Russell, his future Florida State teammate, was co-medalist at 6-under 135.

A week later, Woods made the 36-hole cut at the Junior PGA Championship at PGA Frisco with rounds of 75 and 70. A third-round 77 dropped him to 6 over, and he missed the 54-hole cut.

His back nine in that third round included a double bogey on No. 10 and bogeys on Nos. 11, 12 and 13. He closed with birdies on 17 and 18. Woods tied for ninth at the same event in 2025.

Over Labor Day weekend, Woods signed his first NIL deal with TaylorMade. The agreement covers his driver, fairway woods, irons, wedges and ball.

“Having TaylorMade in my corner has been great,” Woods said in a statement. “They’ve supported me a lot over the last year, and I’m really excited to officially be part of Team TaylorMade. So many great players have been a part of this team, and I’m looking forward to what’s ahead.”

His new setup includes a Qi4D driver (10.5 degrees), Qi4D 3-wood and 7-wood, P7CB irons (3-4), P7TW irons (5-PW), MG5 wedges (54 and 60 degrees) and a TP5x ball.

Woods played the Junior Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass that same weekend on a sponsor exemption. He shot 71-73-71 to finish 1-under 215, tied for eighth.

JP Lynch won at 8 under, one shot ahead of Brady Barnum. Woods tied for 31st at the event in 2025 and entered this year’s week ranked No. 306 in the AJGA rankings.

Woods could also return to the PNC Championship in December. Golfweek reported that organizers are holding a spot for Woods and his father, Tiger, if Tiger decides he is able to play.

Woods verbally committed to Florida State in February. He will join the Seminoles in fall 2027.
