LIV Golf Announces It Has Landed a Lead Investor to Fund the League Into 2027

LIV Golf has secured a lead investor to keep the league funded into 2027, according to a statement from CEO Scott O’Neil released Wednesday.

The statement read in full:

“LIV Golf has an agreement in place with a lead investor, signed by the investor and approved by the Board, to anchor the transaction and play a key role in supporting the path forward for the League’s next era, driven by and for the players. We’re also seeing strong interest from more than a dozen additional parties to potentially serve as minority investors, creating a multi-partner model built for long-term stability and growth.

“Notably, our next chapter will make our players the majority equity holders in LIV Golf, a first for a major global sports league, and gives the League the foundation to keep growing the game worldwide.

“We anticipate finalizing terms in the coming weeks, with the goal of entering a transaction in September. In the meantime, our focus is on delivering a great week for fans and players at Bedminster and finishing the 2026 season strong.”

No financial terms were disclosed. The announcement comes just days after reports that LIV was closing in on a $250 million investment.

Under the new structure, LIV’s schedule is expected to shrink from 14 events to 10. Half will be held internationally and branded as Team Majors, while the other half will be based primarily in the United States and scheduled in the weeks leading up to major championships.

Prize money is also expected to shrink. LIV’s purses, currently set at $30 million per event, are expected to drop below $20 million, and possibly below $15 million, as the league looks to streamline its available capital for next season.

LIV has been searching for new investment for nearly four months, since Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund announced it would stop funding the league beyond the 2026 season. The PIF invested more than $6 billion to launch LIV in 2022, backing events and purses larger than anywhere else in golf.

The search for new capital has coincided with a rocky stretch for the league. LIV’s team event in Michigan, scheduled for later this month, is not expected to be held, and its previously scheduled event in New Orleans was canceled and is not expected to be rescheduled. The league has also been sued by a vendor for failing to make contracted payments, and separately sued by other brands over trademark infringement.

LIV’s remaining 2026 events are LIV Golf New York at Trump National Bedminster, August 6-9, and LIV Golf Indianapolis, August 20-23.
