Brooks Koepka is joining TGL as the first player selected to expansion team Motor City Golf Club’s inaugural roster, the league announced Wednesday. ESPN’s Adam Schefter first reported the move.
“I’ve had the chance to attend TGL matches, and they bring something completely new to the game,” Koepka said in a team release. “The energy, pace and team atmosphere at SoFi Center really stood out, and it’s something I wanted to be part of. I’ve also enjoyed getting to know the Motor City Golf Club ownership group and have been impressed by its commitment to building a winning team. I’m excited to compete alongside my teammates and bring a championship to Detroit.”
Motor City Golf Club was announced in May 2025 as TGL’s first expansion team and will begin competition as one of seven teams for the 2027 season. The team’s ownership group is led by Middle West Partners principals Michael Hamp, Peter Hamp and Kevin Kelleher, all of whom have Detroit roots. The same group also owns Motor City Golf Club in WTGL, the women’s team golf league launching this fall.
“Brooks has built his career around performing at his best when the stakes are highest,” Michael Hamp, Motor City’s team governor, said. “His competitive edge, toughness and championship pedigree fit the identity we are building for Motor City Golf Club and the city we represent. We could not ask for a stronger foundation as we begin assembling our inaugural roster.”
Koepka, 36, is a nine-time PGA Tour winner with five major championships, including back-to-back U.S. Opens in 2017 and 2018 and three PGA Championships. He rejoined the PGA Tour in January through the Returning Member Program after more than three years on LIV Golf, giving up equity the Tour valued at as much as $85 million and writing a $5 million check to return. He was not eligible for TGL while playing for LIV.
“Brooks is one of the game’s most accomplished and recognizable competitors, and he is a tremendous addition to TGL,” said Rufus Hack, president of golf at TMRW Sports. “As the first new player to join TGL through the expansion process, Brooks gives Motor City Golf Club a strong start as it builds its roster and prepares for 2027.”
TGL, founded by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, debuted in 2025 with six teams: Atlanta Drive GC, Boston Common Golf, Jupiter Links GC, Los Angeles Golf Club, New York Golf Club and The Bay Golf Club. Atlanta won the inaugural SoFi Cup, and Los Angeles won the championship in 2026. Koepka’s Motor City teammates have not yet been announced.
