Wesley Bryan Misses Open Qualifying by One Stroke at West Lancashire

Wesley Bryan fell one stroke short of a playoff for The Open Championship at Final Qualifying today. The PGA Tour winner carded a morning round of 70 followed by a five-under 67 in the afternoon at West Lancashire Golf Club, finishing tied for eighth at seven-under for 36 holes, one shot outside a playoff for the final qualifying spots at the 154th Open at Royal Birkdale.

Bryan was tied for fourth at eight-under through 35 holes, a position that would have put him into a playoff for the final qualifying spots. Bryan hit iron off the tee on the par-4 18th and was visibly unhappy with the shot, which led to a closing bogey, dropping him to seven-under and out of the qualifying positions.

Bryan’s brother George also competed at West Lancashire, attempting to qualify for the first time. George finished tied for 25th.

Matthew Jordan, playing in the same group as Bryan, parred the final hole to finish at eight-under and secure his spot in the field. Peter Finch, who reached Final Qualifying himself last year, caddied for Bryan throughout the 36-hole event.

Wesley Bryan won on the PGA Tour at the 2017 RBC Heritage, defeating Luke Donald by one stroke for his lone Tour title. He has not played a PGA Tour event since April 2025, when the Tour suspended him indefinitely for participating in The Duels: Miami, a LIV Golf affiliated YouTube exhibition. Bryan has appealed the suspension and confirmed in January 2026 that the Tour denied his request for a conversation about reinstatement, even after Brooks Koepka returned from LIV. He has since co-founded Your Golf Tour, a creator-led golf tour, alongside George and Grant Horvat.

The Open Championship returns to Royal Birkdale from July 12-19, 2026. Twenty players advanced from the four Final Qualifying sites: West Lancashire, Royal Cinque Ports, Burnham & Berrow, and Dundonald Links.
